1. Do not download and install any nifty programs unless you are sure you will be using them.
2. About once every quarter check for programs you don’t use and remove them. [Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs]
3. Defrag your drive about once a month. This will help speed up your hard disk performance and therefore your overall speed. [Start->programs-Accessories->System Tools->Disk Defragmenter]
4. If you use Microsoft Outlook for email, archive your old email regularly.
5. Beware of free stuff on the internet – they come with a price and invariably install little bits of software unknown to you that eat up your computer’s resources.
6. The more programs you have open concurrently, the slower your machine appears to get. Getting more RAM (memory) for you machine will enable you to work with more stuff open without slowing your machine to a crawl.
