| An employer should always keep tabs on the satisfaction of their employees. If an employee has to confront an employer for a raise, for always getting the most work, having to ask for benefits, or asking for a day off and never getting it, the employer is not going in the right direction. Maintain the employees you have by making yourself the employer of choice.
- Whether you have 4 employees or 400 hundred, it is your job to know their names. Learn the personalities of each employee. Always be courteous and polite to your staff. Make a point of asking how they are everyday and mean it. Employees are the glue that hold everything else together.
- Accept requests for scheduling. Promote a good balance between work and personal life through flex hours and telecommuting policies. Leave a notepad in your office where employees can write in requests for days and times off, and do your best to accommodate them, not everyone will get the day they request off but at least they will know you tried.
- Give bonuses and other rewards to recognize achievement of specific goals. Quarterly evaluations and raises help you, the employer to determine who is doing work and who is not and who deserves a raise at the end of 3 months, 1 year, depending on your company policy.
- Give employees a clear career path so they can work toward it. There are always new positions that open up in a workplace and promoting employees already working for you is a good idea. It minimizes the training you will need to perform for the position, and it will make that one special person’s day. An employer who promotes from within is always well-liked and respected by the staff.
- Employees make mistakes all the time. Does this mean an employer should fire them or humiliate them in front of everyone? Of course not! If you see someone’s performance slipping, address it privately, if something external is affecting the employee, offer some help. A cared for employee is a happy employee.
- Socialize with your staff and organize events with them. Have Christmas parties in December, decorate the office for Halloween and joke around with your employees. Creating opportunities for employees to bond with each other and with managers will usually get them to respect you for being personable and will definitely appreciate a lighter, happier environment.
Keeping your employees happy is the sure way to have loyal employees and employees that are willing to go that extra mile for you. Just relax! Create an environment where people laugh frequently. Work is stressful enough, especially in a business with tight deadlines. A relaxed environment lets people do their best work and at the end of the day, that's what everybody wants.
